Board of Directors Meeting

Executive Summary

The ChoralNet Board of Directors met on May 24, 2005 at the Ramada Plaza O'Hare in Chicago, Illinois for their annual face-to-face meeting. Attending the meeting were Michael Shasberger, President; James D. Feiszli, Secretary; Christine Hoffman, Treasurer; Allen Simon, Frank Albinder, and ChoralNet Manager Martin Knowles in an ex-officio capacity

ChoralNet is financially solvent. The annual fund drive had to be postponed due to the sudden resignation from the Board in February of Chorus America representative Frank Stubbs, who was to have directed the fund drive. Treasurer Hoffman will coordinate the fund drive but, due to a change in job position, had to postpone it until September. An appeal has been on the ChoralNet website for a month but no direct solicitation has taken place and that webpage will now be removed. The Board is actively considering the possibility of adding an administrative position to ChoralNet, who will be entrusted with fund raising and public relations. A sub-committee consisting of Hoffman and Shasberger are developing a prospective job description and financial obligations for such a position.

Rehearsal Arts, a commerical enterprise based in Massachusetts has approached ChoralNet asking to be considered as a ChoralNet Partner. The Board has voted changes into the Bylaws that ensure the continuation of Board representation for the Founding Partners of ChoralNet — ACDA, Chorus America, and IFCM — while allowing for and encouraging additional Partners. Rehearsal Arts has now become the fourth ChoralNet Partner. In a related action, the Board has created a system for Director rotation onto and off the Board of Directors and for Director development. Directors will now serve a maximum of five successive one-year terms and must be off the Board for one year prior to rejoining the Board.

After a long period of discussion and work by a sub-committee consisting of Albinder, Feiszli. Simon, Knowles, and ChoralNet moderator coordinator Carol Hague, the three e-mail distribution lists of ChoralNet — Choralist, ChoralAcademe, and ChoralTalk — and the many online forums hosted by ChoralNet are going to undergo some changes. The operation and policies of the lists have been the same since the founding of ChoralNet in 1995. Choralist had been in existence for two years prior to that. Over the years many forums have been added with the result that there is duplication between all the various online exchange media and confusion in the choral world over what they are and how they should be used. The ChoralNet Board has endorsed a plan by the list sub-committee that will, hopefully, make the lists more useable and appealing to the many choral musicians who no longer use them and also to those who currently use them. The change include:

  • Messages sent to Choralist will be categorized into subject types.
  • Current Choralist subscribers will be given the opportunity to "opt out" of particular types of messages if they so desire.
    • The default subscription to Choralist will be to receive all messages.
    • For example, if a subscriber indicates that they are only interested in receiving messages pertaining to male chorus and community chorus, only messages with that content will be routed to that subscriber.
  • ChoralTalk will remain as it is for the immediate future.
  • ChoralAcademe will become a category in the new Choralist.
  • Website forums will be folded into new lists or categories, or they will be combined into a single "Choral Classified" forum resembling the classified advertising section of a newspaper.
  • A new list "ChoralTalk International" with language options — users may choose to receive messages in specific languages — will be created, replacing EuroChoralTalk, Italia Corale, and the Foro Coral de Latino-Americano.
The hope is that such flexibility will keep subscribers from becoming weary of receiving too much mail of little interest and therefore make the lists more relevant to the global choral community. These changes will begin to be implemented by July 1, 2005.

The ChoralNet Board of Directors has extended offers of collaboration to both Musica and the Choral Public Domain Library. They have offered to design and maintain a web interface for Musica and to host the holdings of the CPDL, combining the resources of all three to offer better resources to the choral community.
