Subject: COMPILATION: summer conducting workshops Friends,
Below, please find the many suggestions which came generously POURING into my Inbox by way of respose to my inquiry about a good summer conducting workshop. Thank you, one and all, to those who contributed any information. Many include a helpful summary description. It will be difficult to choose among all these truly inspiring opportunities! I can see I could joyfully spend my entire summer going from week-to-week, a different workshop each time!
Enjoy!

Check out Rodney Eichenberger workshop in Canon Beach, OR. Also, the University of Washington with Geoffrey Boers is excellent. In Vancouver Canada there is a great workshop sponsored by the BC Choral Federation. Please post a compilation.

I saw your question on Choral Net, and have enclosed the schedule of Alice Parker's workshops at her studio in Massachusetts this year. The Song Leading one might be of interest, although it is not a 'conducting workshop'. You might want to check out the Melodious Accord website (www.melodiousaccord.org) and click on the right hand icon on the home page. This takes you to Study with Alice. The information and application forms are there. I can answer other questions about these programs that you might have.

Study with Alice Parker
THE 2008 MELODIOUS ACCORD FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Spend a few days with Alice Parker in the quiet hills of western Massachusetts. Explore the wonders that happen when we really listen to one another, when we create and re-create songs, and when we discuss how to unite people through song at home, at school, at church and in our communities. Gain new insights, meet new friends, revitalize your musical spirit. Classes limited to 8 people.
May 30-June 2, 2008
Melody Studies. For singers, teachers, conductors, instrumentalists and all lovers of song. We sit around a table and sing together for three days. Many different melodies provide the basis for an ongoing discussion of this kind of human communication: why is it so intensely satisfying? We learn both listening and the unselfconscious use of our voices to enrich our musical lives. Based on Alice's book, The Anatomy of Melody, Exploring the Single Line of Song.
July 13-20, 2008
Teaching Melody through Song Leading. A full week of in-depth study of song leading, including intensive melodic analysis, repertoire, planning SINGS and hands-on practice in leading both small and large groups.
October 19-26 2008
Composers Workshop. For those wishing to share their work with a small, non-judgmental group. The focus is on setting texts and writing for voices, through daily demonstrations, assignments and discussions.

Check out VoiceCare Network, too. Axel Theimer is the moving force.
St. John's College, Minnesota. Their Impact Course (I think that's
what they call it) is pretty general, combining vocal freedom with
conducting techniques that foster same.

Cherwyn,
I am looking for such a conducting workshop myself. The only ones i
can find are at Westminster and Univ. of Michigan.

Hi. There is a two days workshop at Juilliard School of Music, in Manhattan. It's always a good
excuse to go to NY. I took it the first two years. Recommended. Ups, almost forgot, there is another one, in University of
North Texas. It's longer, about a week. I haven't receive information for
the one this year, but make a search there.

Hello,
I would suggest strongly the CME workshop with Janet
Galvan at Ithaca College. If you work with young
singers, I would think this would be one of the best
in the country. Great podium time, and lots of rep and
score study. If not, then check out the Norfolk summer
music institute..Simon should be at that one as well,
and it's only in Connecticut!
Good luck,

Hi,
I have another one for you. The Choral Music Experience course at Elon University in North Carolina will feature Cheryl Dupont as director and Paul Caldwell, who composes with Sean Ivory, as composer-in-residence. Dates are July 7-11. There will be a young artist choir in residence, and the participants will sing on SATB pieces for Master Class. Classes include conducting, rehearsal preparation, score atudy, voice education, rehearsal observation, meet-the composer sessions and Master Class, which is optional.
For more information contact Cheryl Dupont at cheryl_dupont(a)hotmail.com.
Thanks.
Cheryl Dupont

Thanks, Cherwyn. I look forward to your compilation, but didn't have
a chance to write sooner. I attend Rene Clausen's Choral Conducting
School at Concordia College in Morehead and have for several years --
I wouldn't miss it! I've learned more in those one-week sessions than
I have in ALL of my conducting courses! And it's fun -- I'm in 7th
heaven.
Good luck!

Dear Choral Friends:
The Banff Centre has extended the application deadline for the Banff Choral Workshop this summer, for there are still some spaces to fill. We've also dropped the requirement of an audition recording in the interest of expediting these last-minute applications.
So if you have a student or choir members who was deterred by the problem of producing a recording before the deadline, please encourage him/her to try again under these revised guidelines.
I think this is going to be a very enjoyable week singing and performing Carmina Burana with the Vancouver Chamber Choir (see the brochure, below) so please notify as many of your singers as possible. Tell them they can contact me personally (washburn(a)vancouverchamberchoir.com) if they have any trouble with registering or have any other questions.
Many thanks,
John Washburn

From: Eddie AdamsMight I suggest the Summer Choral Conducting Institute with Dr. Daniel Bara at East Carolina University. Dan Bara is a young, up and coming, conductor who has done marvelous things with his college choir. Expect a warm hospitality, relaxed environment, and some excellent music making. Bara is not only a great conductor, he is also a wonderful teacher of the craft from every angle possible. I would also expect that you will find this institute cheaper than some of the other options available. I have been twice and it has changed many things about how I now approach an ensemble.
Best of luck,
Eddie Adams
